A roadway fog seal is a preventive maintenance technique used to seal and protect the pavement surface of a roadway. It involves the application of a thin layer of asphalt emulsion to the surface of the pavement, which penetrates the existing surface and seals any cracks or voids.
A tack coat is a thin layer of asphalt emulsion that is applied to an existing pavement surface before a new layer of asphalt is placed on top. The purpose of the tack coat is to bond the new layer of asphalt to the existing pavement surface and create a smooth, durable surface.
A roadway prime coat is a layer of asphalt emulsion or asphalt binder that is applied to a prepared surface, such as a gravel base, before the placement of an asphalt pavement. The prime coat is used to provide a bond between the base and the asphalt layer, and to seal the base to prevent moisture from entering and causing damage to the pavement.
Paving fabrics create a moisture barrier between older and newer layers of pavement and also slow down the reflective cracking process. The process can be installed on any surface from highways to your own driveway. Fabric installation is also less expensive than full lift asphalt overlay.
